Who are the participants in IRENE?

IRENE is a research project being jointly undertaken by four partners:

• Allgäuer Überlandwerk GmbH (lead partner): Will make part of its electricity network around Wildpoldsried, a village near Kempten in the Allgäu region, available to the project. AÜW will install and operate the metering technology, which it will acquire from Siemens, in the Wildpoldsried power grid. The meters will be connected to a control system using mobile phone technology.
• Siemens AG: Will install a new type of energy automation system that links up many small electricity producers. Newly developed control software will be implemented which will enable better planning and coordination of energy distribution plus more efficient operation of the grid.
• RWTH Aachen and Kempten University: The university partners will oversee the scientific aspects of IRENE. They will bring the latest scientific findings to the project and evaluate the results of IRENE in their research.
